I don't want to be nosy, but may I ask what is an example of the way you were playing with your system which messed it up so you could not boot? Are you talking about a system upgrade, or something more basic? Because I am also playing with my system as I learn all these things, and I am wondering if I should avoid doing certain things.

The general advice I have received is to not log in as root unless I have to, which I do try and follow.

Man, that's really hard to say. That was about 11 years ago. Most of it was from lack of experience, some from not being able to resolve and match the right version of dependencies. Some was being on other distros, like Mandrake, Slackware, etc which had "in progress" repros.

I must have played with 5 or 6 distros before settling on SuSE / openSuSE.

At least from an opensuse stand point, with the level of intelligence of the dependency checking, its pretty hard to "screw up".
